SAMSUNG EVOLVES THROUGH EIGHT GENERATIONS OF FOLDABLE INNOVATION
By Anna LamMarket News

Hong Kong — 16 September 2026. Samsung is not merely a pioneer of the foldable smartphone; as the industry arrives at another defining moment for the category, Samsung has been building towards it for years. Since introducing the first Galaxy Fold in 2019, the company has defined what a foldable is — turning a new form factor into a powerful lineup designed for productivity, creativity, entertainment and self-expression.

Across eight generations of technical evolution, Samsung has overcome engineering challenge after engineering challenge: proving that a smartphone can unfold into a tablet, building the durability to withstand the rigours of daily life, and shaping AI experiences tailored to the foldable form.
Samsung's foldable journey began more than two decades ago. As early as 2011, the company publicly demonstrated its first flexible display prototype, and after years of research into displays, materials science, hinge engineering and device architecture, the Galaxy Fold arrived in 2019. In 2020, the Galaxy Z Flip introduced the compact, expressive clamshell form while the Galaxy Z Fold2 redefined large-screen experiences. In 2021, the Z Fold3 and Z Flip3 brought the first IPX8 water resistance to foldables and mainstream pricing that moved the category into the everyday. The Z Fold4 added a PC-like Taskbar and intuitive split-screen multitasking in 2022, while the Z Flip4 unlocked FlexCam for hands-free content creation. The redesigned Flex Hinge of 2023 made the Z Fold5 fold flush and flat, and the Z Flip5's enlarged cover screen became a versatile FlexWindow. In 2024, Galaxy AI arrived on the Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 — including Cantonese language support, making Samsung one of the first brands to offer reliable, comprehensive Cantonese AI voice translation on mobile devices in Hong Kong. And in 2025, the slimmed-down Z Fold7 broke the weight barrier of conventional bar-type flagships with a 200-megapixel camera, while the Z Flip7's edge-to-edge FlexWindow showed that choosing a foldable no longer means compromising on camera, battery or build quality.

Today, the new Galaxy Z Fold8 further underlines that leadership. The Z Fold8 Ultra stands as the ultimate flagship, built for extreme productivity and professional-grade creation; the Z Fold8 pairs a new 4:3 inner display with a body weighing just 201 grams — the world's lightest foldable smartphone — for reading, content and everyday immersion; and the Z Flip8 continues to lead the portable trend with real-time, glanceable AI. For a fast-paced, tech-savvy market like Hong Kong, the lineup once again sets a new standard for what a premium mobile experience can be.
