Rolex Lands on Canton Road: Emperor Opens Hong Kong's First Flagship
By Anna LamEvent

Hong Kong's first Rolex flagship store has opened on Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui: three storeys and 381 square metres in the middle of the city's densest luxury strip. It is run by Emperor Watch & Jewellery, which has been Rolex's local agent since 1967.

Dr Albert Yeung, founder and chairman of Emperor Group, framed the day as continuity rather than arrival. "Since 1967, Emperor Group has been honoured to serve as Rolex's agent in Hong Kong, building close to six decades of mutual trust," he said. "Bringing Rolex to this vibrant new address confirms our long-standing commitment to excellence and service."

The building is the work of the Swiss studio Atelier Oï with the Rolex design team, built around the idea of a jewellery box that opens layer by layer. The facade takes the fluted bezel into glass fibre reinforced concrete, its pleats allude to the traditional oil-paper umbrella, and LED strips run through the wall at the pace of a seconds hand. Inside, a fluted wall of hand-made Venetian Murano glass rises to the ceiling. A bronze portal modelled on the moon gate of a Chinese garden leads to the VIP area, framing a plaster wall whose arched window carries a silhouette of Tsim Sha Tsui.

The loudest object is quiet in colour: a chandelier almost 11 metres tall, hung through the stairwell across all three floors, made of hand-made green Venetian glass abacus beads on bronze cables, a nod to precision and to the counting frame. The ground floor holds the main showcases, a viewing area and a private salon. The first floor adds a bar, a seven-metre display niche and a backlit panel of gold folding fans worked in leather. The second floor carries exhibitions and after-sales across nine podiums, opening with the Submariner, beside a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned lounge laid out as a private home in brown and beige marble, oak and suede.

Cindy Yeung, chairman of Emperor Watch & Jewellery, called the store a milestone, noting that the two companies already run eight boutiques across Hong Kong and major mainland cities. Emperor itself dates to 1942 and trades across Hong Kong, Macau, the mainland, Singapore and Malaysia. Nicholas Tse was among the guests on the day.
