MB&F x Caran d'Ache: Meet the GorillaSharpener

As part of the M.A.D.Gallery's 15th-anniversary celebrations, MB&F and Caran d'Ache have transformed one of Switzerland's most familiar childhood objects into an unexpected piece of art. Meet the GorillaSharpener: a fully functional Caran d'Ache pencil sharpener reimagined by MB&F as a muscular, knuckle-walking mechanical creature.
Since 1933, the Caran d'Ache Sharpening Machine has been a fixture of Swiss classrooms, helping generations of children turn their imagination into words and drawings. In the hands of MB&F creative designer Maximilian Maertens, that utilitarian object takes on an entirely new character: lifted onto powerful stainless-steel and cast-iron limbs, it tilts forward as if poised to move across your desk — transforming a familiar functional object into a three-dimensional artwork, and perhaps offering one more reason to put down the screen and pick up a pencil again.
Finished in Alpine Frost blue, the GorillaSharpener is a limited edition of 300 pieces, very much in the spirit of MB&F's mantra "A creative adult is a child who survived". It also continues a long-standing creative relationship with Caran d'Ache, following the Astrograph writing instrument of 2016 and, more recently, the DinoSharpener — another playful reinterpretation of the famous pencil sharpener.
The GorillaSharpener is being unveiled on September 24th, World Gorilla Day. To mark the occasion, MB&F has partnered with the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the world's largest and longest-running organisation dedicated to gorilla conservation. Through the symbolic adoption of the historic Pablo mountain gorilla group in Rwanda, the brand's contribution will support the Fund's daily protection, scientific research and conservation work for endangered mountain gorillas.
The GorillaSharpener retails at CHF 850 + VAT and is available at M.A.D.Galleries, MB&F Labs and Lounge, and the MB&F eShop.
