HONOR Puts a Cinema in Your Pocket: Magic9 Pro Max Lands in Hong Kong With Stephen Fung's Premiere

HONOR chose the Hong Kong Palace Museum to launch the Magic9 Pro Max, and chose a film premiere to do it. Hong Kong is the first market outside mainland China to get the phone, which tells you how much weight the brand is putting on the city, but the format says something else: this is a camera launch wearing the clothes of a cinema event.

At the centre of it was Stephen Fung. The director shot a short film, Secret Signal, entirely on the Magic9 Pro Max, and it screened to the room before he came out to talk about what the phone did and did not get in his way. His argument was not about sharpness. It was about depth, about the sense of space that sound and picture create together, and about why ARRI still means something to a director.

That is the substance of this launch. HONOR has partnered with ARRI, the camera house behind the ARRIFLEX, and the claim is not a filter or a colour preset slapped on afterwards. The company describes it as the front half of a production pipeline compressed into a phone: framing, colour preview, on-set monitoring and the handoff to post.

The camera system is a pair of 200-megapixel sensors, a main unit on a 1/1.28-inch sensor at f/1.57 with optical stabilisation quoted at gimbal grade, and a 200-megapixel periscope at f/1.4 behind f/2.6, both rated CIPA 8.0. HONOR's own H1 imaging chip works on RAW, and the company claims an 8dB signal-to-noise gain and 14 stops of dynamic range from the combined pipeline. A 50-megapixel ultrawide and a square 50-megapixel front camera complete the set.

ARRI's contribution runs through the software. LogC3, 10-bit colour and ARRI Wide Gamut 3 preserve highlight and shadow information for grading. The ARRI cinema mode records to 4K at 60fps, offers 2.39:1 framing, 14 colour presets and 87 ARRI Looks previewed live, and adds on-set monitoring tools for exposure and focus. For post, the APV codec records 10-bit 4:2:2 and, by HONOR's measurement, takes about 20 percent less space than ProRes at comparable quality.

Sound gets equal billing, which is unusual. The phone carries a four-microphone array, one directional and three omnidirectional, able to isolate a source up to 20 metres away and suppress off-axis noise beyond 60 degrees, with four polar patterns plus a custom setting. The dual stereo speakers are 1216 units, and the audio system carries an SGS five-star certification.

The event itself was built around that idea rather than around a stage. Art director Wen Nianzhong, a Hong Kong Film Award winner, designed three classic local film sets in the museum: a retro boudoir dressing table, a Hong Kong-style booth restaurant with an old telephone box, and a 1960s balcony. Visitors shot in them with ARRI mode and the microphone array, which is a more convincing demonstration than any spec sheet. ARRI's own cinema cameras were on display alongside.

The design borrows from the ARRIFLEX three-lens turret, with a 1+2 arrangement that gives the main, periscope and ultrawide cameras a deliberate geometry rather than a random bump. The body is a single piece of metal, frame and camera module merged. Three colours: Moss Green and Silver Salt for the 16GB+1TB model, plus Shadow Black for 12GB+512GB.

IP68, IP69 and IP69K. MagicOS 11 adds a one-tap AI key for context-aware suggestions, Gemini is on board, and HONOR Connect now reaches Apple Watch and AirPods, supports the AirDrop framework, and shares to Insta360 devices.

HONOR also showed the AIoT range due in Hong Kong, including the CHOICE mini vacuum, a portable inflator, the CHOICE Smart Ring Pro, Earbuds S10, audio glasses and the Watch X5 Play.
