FROM 253G TO 201G: SAMSUNG'S ENGINEERING BEHIND THE WORLD'S LIGHTEST FOLD
By Anna LamMarket News

Hong Kong — 9 September 2026. Since introducing the first 276-gram Galaxy Fold in 2019, Samsung has kept expanding what a foldable smartphone can be — refining hinge and display design generation after generation while upgrading durability and everyday practicality. As that technology matured, the focus turned to a new core challenge: making a large-screen foldable lighter and easier to carry in daily life, without sacrificing what makes the big screen special. Under that relentless pursuit, the Galaxy Z Fold5 came down to 253 grams and the Galaxy Z Fold6 to 239. Now the Galaxy Z Fold8 brings a new body structure and breakthroughs in core technology, materials and internal architecture, compressing the figure to just 201 grams — a full 52 grams lighter than the Z Fold5, and the lightest Fold-class foldable smartphone in the world.

A 2024 YouGov survey showed that bulk remains the top reason consumers hold off on buying a foldable, while battery life, durability and display quality top the list for those considering one. That insight gave Samsung an even firmer engineering goal: build a thinner, lighter foldable while perfecting the experiences users value most — battery life, camera performance, thermal management and durability all had to rise at the same time.
Achieving that could never come from swapping out a single component. Samsung's engineers had to rebuild the entire device — advancing the underlying folding technology, introducing revolutionary new materials, and re-examining hundreds of core components and auxiliary parts down to fractions of a gram. From 253 grams to 201 grams, three major engineering innovations drove the transformation.

The thinner the device, the finer the precision required. The displays of the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra use Flex Titanium technology, with a titanium-alloy film tailored to the folding structure at a thickness of just tens of microns — about a third the diameter of a human hair. The metal plate supporting the display is precision-machined to roughly 0.2 mm, as thin as 0.15 mm at its thinnest point, with the manufacturing process split into stages to guarantee the flatness such extreme thinness demands.
The hinge carries an equally exacting brief: beyond opening and closing, it must spread the forces of countless folds across the whole body. Samsung's engineers tailor the hinge to each form factor, precisely balancing load distribution, strength, durability, internal space and weight — never simply shrinking the previous generation's design.
The second breakthrough came from materials. The Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra pair Flex Titanium with an upgraded Advanced Armor Aluminum frame, while more conductive graphite cooling layers — around 7% larger in volume on the Z Fold8 Ultra — manage heat in a thinner body. A composite metal in the rear cover combines the properties of different metals to save weight without giving up thermal performance.
The third breakthrough was weight itself. Engineers reviewed around 270 core components and more than 180 auxiliary parts — from display and hinge to camera lenses, circuit boards, antennas, brackets, tape and fasteners — with precision demands down to 0.1 gram and 0.1 mm, and for some auxiliary parts to 0.001 gram. The PCB was redesigned to remove redundant traces, the Magnetic Flux Channel antennas were reworked to eliminate unnecessary overlap, and about 15 of the 180-plus auxiliary parts were removed entirely while the rest were trimmed, reshaped or merged. Each adjustment looks trivial alone; across the whole device, they add up to real grams.

Crucially, the weight saved was reinvested in the experience. Within a body similar in size to the Galaxy Z Fold7, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra fits a 5,000 mAh battery, a 200-megapixel main camera and — a first for the Fold line — a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens. Samsung's pursuit of a lighter foldable was never about cutting features; it was about rethinking the entire device, so that everything users treasure in a flagship — battery, camera, cooling — could grow as the grams fell. From 276 grams in 2019 to 201 grams today, eight generations of accumulated engineering have made the Galaxy Z Fold lighter and more portable without a single compromise to the flagship experience.
